Whitecourt tops the list for snowmobiling destinations

Local riders let you in on their secrets

by Michelle Carr Johnston

The town of Whitecourt is considered the snowmobiling capital of Alberta. The local snowmobile club, Whitecourt Trailblazers, maintains an impressive network of trails covering over 400 km. Located at the southern tip of the famous Golden Triangle trail system, Whitecourt is approximately 175 km northwest of Edmonton at the junction of Highways 43 and 32.

Must-do ride: the Goodwin Lake Trail

Starting at the Groat Creek staging area, this well-treed trail takes the rider through rolling hills out to Goodwin Lake. The staging area can be reached by heading south on Highway 32 for about 15 km.

Trail maps can be found at the staging area and on the Whitecourt Trailblazers website.

Sledders’ hangouts

The local Boston Pizza is a popular gathering spot for locals and visitors alike. You’ll find it at 3836 Kepler Street, just off Highway 43.

Extended stay

For those looking for a longer ride, the 350 km Golden Triangle is a must. The trail features a variety of terrain, with warm-up shelters interspersed along the way. Be sure to check trail conditions by calling the snow line at 1-800-313-7383 or check the Golden Triangle website.

Although the Golden Triangle is always a favorite among visitors, local rider Aaron Munro has a favorite alternative: the Silver Triangle.

Starting right from town, take the Summit Trail (which carries on to the Silver Summit ski hill) to the Summit shelter. Follow the Manweiler trail from there to the Gundy cabin. Riders can head back to town on the Golden Triangle trail.

The Trailblazers website has downloadable maps that illustrate all the routes and indicate the location of cabins and rest areas along the way.
