Miles of trails plus an interview with a local sledder

by Michelle Carr Johnston

Home of the Pembina Driftbusters Snowmobile Club, the town of Westlock can be found 53 km north of Edmonton. The club maintains 145 km of groomed trail 30 km north of Westlock.

Must-do ride

A local favorite, the Long Island Lake Trail is the must-do ride for those visiting Westlock.  Take Highway 44 north to Highway 801 and follow the signs to the staging area.

Sledders’ hangouts

Local sledders can often be found at the Boston Pizza, located just off Highway 18 at the east end of town.

The Best Western and the Westlock Inn both have lounges where riders can meet for a cozy post-sled drink.

Extended Stay

With 145 km of groomed snowmobile trail at the ready, there is plenty of riding to be done by those who can stay in Westlock for a day or two. The Driftbusters’ trails connect with the TransCanada Snowmobile Trail. Follow it west to Swan Hills or east to Athabasca.

Maps of the area can be downloaded from the Pembina Driftbusters website.
