Winter is an exciting time for many of Westlock’s residents. There is a dedicated group of snowmobilers in this town of approximately 5,000. The local club, the Pembina Drift Busters, maintain nearly 150 kilometres of trails.
Denise England has been sledding for much of her life, purchasing her first sled more than 30 years ago.
“In 1973 my brother and I together bought a new 340 Yamaha,” said England. “(We) took turns using it or doubling on it when we went on poker rallies.”
Since then, England has graduated to a 600 Ski-Doo Summit. She has a long history with the Westlock sledding club.
“I was one of the founding members of our snowmobile club, the Pembina Drift Busters, which will be 25 years old next year,” said England. “On average we have about 80 family members that join our club each year.”
Westlock has many trails surrounding the town, with a popular one being the trail towards Long Island Lake. The trails take sledders past a number of lakes in the area and are well signed, traversing over rolling hills and through bush. They are excellent for family snowmobiling.
“I enjoy riding on all the groomed trails our club has just north of Westlock,” said England. “We have two warm-up cabins along the trails (where we can stop and) roast hotdogs and visit with friends and visitors to the area.”
England has done much to promote sledding among women, but also appreciates the help she’s received in her years of being involved in the Drift Busters.
“In all my years of riding I have been very fortunate to ride with guys who always look after the ladies that are riding in their group,” she said. “I have ridden trails all over the province. I will admit that I have gotten into some situations where I needed help getting back on the trail and was the source of entertainment for the group.”
