Marv Wahl

All trails lead to Yorkton, Saskatchewan for this veteran sledder

by Gail Jansen-Kesslar

Marv Wahl has snowmobiled all his life, but didn’t become a “hard core” rider until he moved to Yorkton in 1994. Now, even though he’s since moved from the Yorkton area and even though his sledding experience has seen him head to Yellowstone, Lake Tahoe, Golden and Fernie just to name a few, he always comes back to the trails in Yorkton.

“I think the thing that brings me back the most is the good job the Sno-Riders Club does in grooming the trail,” said Wahl. “Even my friends from Calgary come here to ride the trails because they’re usually always very smooth and well maintained and the snow conditions are always good.”

The trails are perfect for riders of every level, said Wahl, from beginner to experienced.

Wahl rides a Yamaha Nitro XTX, partially because of the good fuel mileage it gives him and partially just because of how much fun it is to ride. His favourite ride is to head out of Yorkton northwards up to Good Spirit, all the way through to Canora and Hudson Bay.

“The trails are well-maintained as far as grooming goes, nice and smooth and well-marked,” said Wahl. “They’ve also got lots of warm-up shacks and plenty of stops along the way where you can grab something to eat and get fuel.”

At the end of the day, it always comes down to trail conditions for Wahl.

“You have the trees to ride in plus the wide open fields and you can still find deep snow without having to worry about avalanches,” said Wahl. “You may not have the big climbs here, but you have the deep snow without the danger, so that would be a major draw right there.”
