How long have you been riding? I’ve been sledding for probably 30 years.

First sled: I’m trying to think—it was a 440 Polaris

Current sled: I ride a Ski-Doo—an 800 Renegade.

What do you like about your sled? It’s (modified) and I like all the power of the two-stroke along with everything else about it. It’s a good hillclimber, all that kind of stuff.

What is your favourite riding area? Since I’ve been sledding we’ve owned property in Sunshine Valley so I haven’t really travelled that much except for locally—the Coquihalla and past Manning (B.C.) and stuff. I guess my favourite riding is when we use our snowmobiles as lifts to go up to the tree line for snowboarding, so my favourite areas are back in the Silvertip Bowl areas where we go snowboarding. We just climb up logging roads and then drop off the snowboarders to come down.

Can you describe your riding style? My riding style would be more family oriented unless I’m on my own or with my kids who are now in their twenties, and then I would be more extreme. But my overall riding style would just be more recreational—more fun. I love deep powder and I’d rather be in that, of course, than on the hard-packed trail.

What is it that keeps you coming back, year after year? I just love just being outside and hitting fresh snow. Every time there’s a new snowfall I love getting out into the backcountry and bombing along. There’s no better feeling than coming through four feet of powder. I also like travelling at night on the sleds when the lights are picking up the fresh snow as you're coming through the forest roads. There’s just something magical when you get snow all over the trees.
