Why have SPOT GPS messenger devices become so popular?

Bob Zimmerman, safety co-ordinator for the B.C. Snowmobile Federation, uses and recommends the SPOT GPS messenger device. The device allows SPOT users to communicate with selected contacts, so they can let people know they are okay at the touch of a button.

For minor emergencies, like getting stuck, there is another button allowing the user to call selected contacts to their location.

In a serious situation, there is an SOS button that will alert emergency responders to the situation and allow the user to be tracked by GPS.
