Lorne Bokshowan is the owner of Recreation Supply Co. in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He recently took a late season ride through some of B.C.‘s most coveted sledding terrain, and brought along his son Taylor Bokshowan and friends Greg Forgie, Shawn Lloyd and Kurt Chudyk.
“May 4 is the latest we have gone riding,” said Bokshowan. “But many of our customers go in June and even July.”
The group spent the first day of their trip in the popular Owl’s Head area of Sicamous, where they finally tracked down the conditions they were looking for.
“We had to trailer up about 10 kilometres before we hit snow,” said Bokshowan. “There was about six inches of fresh snow and the day was great.”
Pushing onward
On the second day, heavy rainfall warnings kept two of the riders off the trails, but the other three still found a way to explore the territory.
“The three young guys—Taylor, Kurt and Shawn—went up to the cabin on Boulder Mountain to watch it snow all day,” said Bokshowan. “They rode in the trees with limited visibility but still had some fun.”
Day three brought the sledders up Boulder Mountain in Revelstoke for approximately seven kilometres, all in the pursuit of fresh snow. Bokshowan and his comrades were not disappointed in the least.
“By the time we got past the cabin there was anywhere from 18 inches to two feet of fresh powder,” he said. “A beautiful way to start off the month of May.”
A late season favourite
Revelstoke is a choice destination for Bokshowan, due to the community’s openness to snowmobilers, and of course its pristine sledding conditions.
“The best riding is always found in Revelstoke because they always get fresh snow,” he said. “If not today, usually tomorrow. Revelstoke really caters to snowmobilers, as we all enjoy spending money in town on great meals and a few drinks.”
Bokshowan values his interprovincial riding experiences. Getting familiar with the snowmobiling terrain in other provinces makes him more aware of what his customers will look for in a sled.
“We at Recreation Supply Co. sell parts for all snowmobile brands,” he said. “So we try to ride all brands. Each model and brand is different in many ways.”
