Lyle Birnie

Profile of snowmobiler Lyle Birnie of Westlock, Alberta

by Michelle Carr Johnston

No stranger to sledding, Lyle Birnie has been snowmobiling in the Westlock area since 1964—his first machine was a ’62 Sno Scoot. He’s come a long way since then.

Currently vice-president of the Alberta Snowmobile Association, Birnie enjoys trail riding on his 1998 Ski MXZ or 1996 Arctic Cat Puma.

A lover of fresh air and the great outdoors, Birnie describes an ideal ride as one “rides for 30 or 40 miles, stops for a wiener roast, and then rides another 30 miles.”

Future riding plans for Birnie include a trip to the Crowsnest Pass to explore the many trails and logging roads that are a sledder’s dream.
