Ski-Cab snowmobile cabins

by Kirsten Armleder

I love writing about innovative new products—even if they are a little out of the ordinary—and that’s exactly how I would describe Ski-Cab snowmobile cabins.

Developed by Lochmann Cabine—a company in South Tyrol, Italy, that makes cabs for tractors—Ski-Cabs are enclosed cabs that fasten to the chassis of a snowmobile to keep riders warm and protected from the elements.

The cabs feature high-resistance steel and aluminum frames, and plexiglass and laminated glass windows. They even come with window-washer wiper systems. The cabs can accommodate up to three people. They weigh about 154 pounds, and according to Lochmann Cabine, Ski-Cabs won’t affect the stability of the machine. That being said, we have to question how well they would handle steep terrain and off-camber riding. Ski-Cabs were not developed for boondockers and hillclimbers, though, and it’s safe to assume they won’t be showing up in Revelstoke or Valemount, B.C., but we can see ice fishermen, cottage owners and long-distance trail riders buying into the idea.

Ski-Cabs are available for the four major snowmobile brands—Ski-Doo, Polaris, Arctic Cat and Yamaha. They will be arriving in Canada and the U.S. in January 2014. Contact your local snowmobile dealership to see if they will be selling Ski-Cabs.
