BC Link group communication system

by Kirsten Armleder

In addition to the new Tracker 3 beacon, Backcountry Access (BCA) will be releasing its new BC Link group communication system this 2013-2014 sledding season.

BC Link is a two-way radio and it is designed to keep your riding party in constant contact so as to increase the level of group safety. According to BCA, avalanches can be avoided when there is good communication between users.

The system, which includes a base unit and a smart microphone unit, is designed to be worn with all backpacks but it has been optimized for use with BCA’s line of Stash Packs. The base unit can be stored inside a backpack or clipped to a belt. The base unit contains a rechargeable 3.7-volt lithium-ion battery to last longer in harsh winter climates.

A cable connects the base unit to the smart microphone unit. The microphone unit clips to the shoulder or sternum strap of your backpack and it contains all the controls, such as volume, the on/off button and the talk button. BCA even designed the controls to be glove-friendly, so there is no fumbling around for the right button.

The system is compatible with all standard FRS and GMRS radios. It comes with 38 FRS and GMRS channels plus 83 sub-channels, so there should be little to no interference when you need it the most.

When released, BC Link will be available at snowmobile dealerships throughout Western Canada as well as online at BCA’s website.
