If you really want to be prepared for sledding safely this season, taking along one of Backcountry Access’s Arsenal shovels is a must.
According to the experts at Backcountry Access, shovelling accounts for the majority of time spent on an avalanche rescue—so having the right tools for the job can make all the difference in an emergency.
This product can be a considerable time-saver (and consequently, a lifesaver) if you find yourself in an avalanche situation. The company has taken it a step further and introduced shovels that come with extra features, inventively designed to give additional tools to the snowmobiler, without adding a lot of bulk or weight to carry.
Some models include a 35-centimetre snow and wood saw that fits neatly into the handle for easy deployment. Even once the saw is removed, the shovel remains fully intact and in working condition—allowing it to be used in conjunction with the saw if needed during a rescue operation.
In addition to this innovative option, the company also manufactures shovels with an avalanche probe stowed in the handle. This model works in a similar way to the saw models, and the probe can easily be deployed without compromising the use of the shovel.
There are two blade sizes available for all Arsenal shovels—one that is smaller and more compact for carrying (the A1 model), and another that offers a larger blade and provides optimal digging capacity (the A2 model).
