2015 is Yamaha’s re-entry into the mountain market

Yamaha lifted the covers off its 2015 snowmobile lineup this week, and for once, the rumours were true. The company did indeed pour some dollars into its new mountain lineup.

Meet the 2015 SR-Viper MTX.

Available in 153-inch or 162-inch track lengths, the new SR-Viper MTX features the SRV chassis—which is basically Yamaha’s version of Arctic Cat’s ProClimb chassis—and it’s powered by Yamaha’s Genesis four-stroke engine. This three-cylinder powerplant pumps out 1,049 ccs, but if that’s not enough for you, Yamaha is offering a factory turbo kit as an accessory option.

The SR-Viper MTX also benefits from an adjustable 38- to 39-inch ski stance and a 2.6-inch Power Claw track—among other rider-specific features—to make it a worthy contender for the competitive mountain sector.

The SR-Viper MTX is the base model and the SE package is the next step up. It comes with Fox Float 3 front and rear shocks instead of the standard HPG shocks. Then there’s the limited edition version.

Available only during Yamaha’s Spring Power Surge event, the SR-Viper MTX LE features a flashy orange and blue colour scheme and upgraded Fox Float 3 Evol X front shocks.

To see them for yourself and compare other models in the 2015 lineup, head over to Yamaha’s website.

First impression:

"I was out riding for Slednecks 17 today (March 27, 2014) on one of my turbo Vipers. My Viper did everything today—technical tree riding, crazy climbs, big drops and whips. It rides like an 800 but with another 100 horsepower." — Chris Brown, seasoned big mountain rider with Slednecks and head instructor at Ride with Chris Brown Adventures in Whistler, B.C.
