BCA Float MtnPro Vest Avalanche Airbag for snowmobilers

by Kirsten Armleder

When it comes to mountain sledding, avalanche safety is important, but so is protecting your upper body from trauma. This year, Backcountry Access (BCA) released a product that is designed to do both.

The Float MtnPro Vest Avalanche Airbag is an all-in-one protective vest and avalanche airbag. The front, sides and back of the vest feature a millimetre-thick hard shell between two layers of shock-absorbing polyethylene foam. The front compartment of the pack is where a shovel and probe are stored, and the front pockets of the vest are built specifically for a transceiver.

The pack also comes with a hydration bag. Other features include a left or right side trigger mount for the airbag, a fixed leg strap, side panels and a D-ring tether loop for attaching the sled kill switch.

According to BCA, the pack is comfortable to wear—thanks to a waist belt that takes most of the weight off the snowmobiler’s shoulders. The torso length is adjustable, too. Accessories for the pack include an external shovel carry attachment.
